If you’re looking to advance your wrestling skills at an accelerated pace, you need to give time and attention to the mental skills needed to be a complete wrestler.
So where do you start?
The foundation of your mental game is your attitude.
It’s the difference maker in your wrestling performance.
When you face an opponent that closely matches your skill level your attitude will give you an edge…and often the win.
Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. – Thomas Jefferson
Some truths about the right attitude:
- No matter what happens, your attitude is a choice.
- It’s easier to maintain the right attitude than to regain it.
- Your attitude determines your actions.
- Your attitude is your outward look that is based on past experiences.
No matter what happens, your attitude is a choice.
Although you don’t have a choice about everything you’ll go through to achieve your goals in wrestling, you do have a choice about how you’ll go through it.
Change begins in your mind not your circumstances. When things aren’t going as you hoped it’s easy to get down on yourself and focus on what just happened as the reason for your attitude slipping.
Top performing wrestlers realize that no matter what, they must choose to have the right attitude. You’re never going to perform perfectly every time. In fact, perfect performances aren’t the norm. Your coach, the officials, teammates or the circumstances are never going to be perfect either. Train yourself to focus on what you can control…the choices you make about your attitude.
It’s easier to maintain the right attitude than to regain it.
Work on keeping a positive attitude when things get tough. Say to yourself, “I choose to find the positive in this situation and keep the right attitude.”
Once you let your attitude slip below a certain point, you’ll probably not get back in the right frame of mind to compete at your best that day. The wrong attitude left unchecked will ruin your performance until you gain control of it and decide to change it.
Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed. – Abraham Lincoln
Your attitude determines your actions.
The mental patterns you currently have form the basis of your attitude. You tend to act out how you’re thinking and feeling. If you’re thinking and feeling like the situation is impossible to overcome, chances are your actions will help it become true. It’s what has been called a self-fulfilling prophecy. Your attitude is the prophet of your future.
Your attitude is your outward look that is based on past experiences.
Your brain loves patterns. It’s hardwired to perceive each new experience in a way that’s deeply influenced by past outcomes, social conditioning and personal preferences.
Scientists have discovered our brains have a preference to embed negative memories as a sort of protection system.
That’s why it’s hard to see a brand new experience, for what it really is… unlike any other and filled with limitless possibility.
And it pretty much guarantees without recognizing and reprogramming these mental patterns, our new outcomes will be very much like our unsatisfying old outcomes.
Perhaps you have a predominantly positive attitude. That’s great! You’re headed in the right direction. But what about the past experiences that shape your future wrestling performance?
They’re tricky to recognize and hard to fix unless you have a plan that’s proven to work. Check out my Gaining Your Mental Edge Program that will help you correct these limiting mental patterns that are blocking you from peak wrestling performance.
